Class Descriptions and Dress Code

Ballet

Class

Creative Movement (Ages 3-4)
A fun, introductory class into the world of dance. Students will learn basic dance room etiquette, in a fun and age appropriate setting. Dancers will focus on large motor skills, basic tumbling, rhythm, basic concepts, and creativity.

Creative Ballet (Ages 4-5)
An introductory class with more focus on ballet terminology, large motor skills, basic tumbling, and rhythm with an introduction to ballet technique. Students will reinforce etiquette and concepts introduced in Creative Movement.

Dress
Pink leotard with attached skirt, pink or flesh-colored tights, pink or flesh-colored ballet shoes. Hair must be pulled back away from face, and attached securely!

Male Dress
Slightly form fitting t-shirt, flexible black shorts or sweats. Pants must be form fitting enough to see the body lines. Black ballet slippers.
Ballet I (Ages 5-6), Ballet I (Ages 7-9)
This class is designed for students with little or no ballet experience. Ballet technique, stretching and dance concepts will be introduced and practiced. Emphasis will be placed on body awareness, balance/control and expression.

Dress:(Ages 5-6):
Pink leotard. Skirt is optional but must be attached. Pink or flesh-colored tights, pink or flesh-colored ballet shoes. Hair must be pulled back away from face and attached securely.

Female Dress (Ages 7-9)
Black leotard, any style. Pink or flesh-colored tights and ballet slippers. No skirts or shorts. Hair must be pulled back in a bun and attached securely.

Male Dress
Slightly form fitting t-shirt, flexible black shorts or sweats. Pants must be form fitting enough to see the body lines. Black ballet slippers.
Beginer Ballet II - Advanced Ballet
These classes consist of traditional ballet training, including stretching, and center allegros and adagios. A strong emphasis will be placed on technique and ballet terms.

Dress: Black leotard – any style, pink or flesh-colored tights, flat ballet shoes, NO SKIRTS OR SHORTS. Hair must be pulled back away from face, and attached securely!

Male Dress: T-shirt (slightly form-fitting), flexible black shorts or sweats (shorts cannot exceed the knees in length; shorts or sweats must be form-fitting enough for body-line detection). Black ballet slippers.

Bharatanatyam

Class

Bharatanatyam: Indian Classical Dance (Ages 8 and up)
This ancient dance form derives inspiration from the temples of southern India. It has three main stylistic components: Technical, lyrical and dramatic. Bharatanatyam places emphasis on complex rhythmic patterns, graceful poses and expressions.

Dress
Leggings, Tunic, and Scarf.
Bollywood Dance
This dance derives inspiration from many forms of dance including Indian classical and folk dances, belly dancing and hip-hop.

Creative Funk and Funk

Class

Creative Funk and Funk (Ages 5 and up)
A contemporary dance form incorporating urban street styles, funk and club movement trends. Popping, locking and gliding techniques will be emphasized. All classes offered are beginning level and are divided by age groups, not ability.

Dress: Baggy layers, comfortable & flexible clothing. Socks and tennis shoes. (Please carry these shoes separately in a dance bag – do not wear them outside!) Hair must be pulled back away from face, and attached securely!

Jazz, Lyrical, and Musical Theater

Class

Jazz (Ages 7 and up)
This class consists of jazz technique including floor warm-ups, isolations, progressions and combinations. This is a fast-paced class usually set to popular music.

Lyrical (Ages 8 and up)
A graceful style of dance, focusing on emotion, storytelling. Flexibility and ballet technique are emphasized.

Musical Theater (Pre-Teen and up)
Jazz experience required. A fun, upbeat Jazz style class with emphasis on staging, projecting and acting.

Dress: Any solid colored leotard, any color tights, Capri jazz pants or dance shorts, flesh-colored or slip-on jazz shoes. Hair must be pulled back away from face, and attached securely!

Boys: T-shirt (slightly form-fitting), flexible black shorts or sweats (shorts cannot exceed the knees in length; shorts or sweats must be form-fitting enough for body-line detection). Black jazz shoes.

Contemporary and Modern

Class

Contemporary (intermediate and advanced levels)
An expressive style that borrows from lyrical, modern, ballet, and jazz techniques. It allows the dancer to break from the strict structure of ballet with an emphasis on improvisation, floor work, breathing and posture.

Modern (Ages 9 and up)
Classes focus on a variety of modern techniques.

Dress: Any solid colored leotard w/convertible tights (optional), capris or shorts. Bare feet or dance paws. Hair must be pulled back away from face, and attached securely!

Boys: T-shirt (slightly form-fitting), flexible black shorts or sweats (shorts cannot exceed the knees in length; shorts or sweats must be form-fitting enough for body-line detection). Bare feet or dance paws.

Tap

Class

Tap (Ages 5 and up)
These classes will emphasize the development and advancement of tap technique including center floor and progressions; the importance of precision, rhythmic abilities and sound quality is also stressed.

Dress: Any solid colored leotard, any color tights or shorts. Suggested tap shoe: Bloch "Tap On", Capezio CG09, or Jason Samuels in black. Hair must be pulled back away from face, and attached securely!
Boys Dress
T-shirt (slightly form-fitting), flexible black shorts or sweats (shorts cannot exceed the knees in length; shorts or sweats must be form-fitting enough for body-line detection). Black flat tie tap shoes, leather finish, not patent leather.

Company Classes

Class

Competitive Company
The Dance Conservatory Competitive Company is a performance-based team for dancers who wish for additional performance opportunities throughout the year, to further build their technique, and to grow as dancers. The team competes locally 3-4 times per year. The team also does several local performances around our community. This company offers professional training in all genres of dance and exposes young aspiring dancers to opportunities that will enhance their dance knowledge, dance vocabulary, technical ability, and stage presence.
